Patients always ask me what same-day teeth are, what does it entail?
Same day teeth at Kiss Dental, the clinic I work at, is basically when patients come in either toothless, or with missing teeth, or with missing teeth, or with upper and lower teeth that no longer function due to periodontal disease, or patients who have neglected their teeth. What we can do is we can remove the remaining teeth, the same day. And, simultaneously, we can put a minimum of four implants in both the upper and lower jaw, if necessary. And from these implants we can fix bridges – the same day, too.
Practical, They come in toothless, with missing teeth, or with teeth that no longer function and come out with a new and beautiful smile, all provided by dental implants, all on the same day. Same-day dental treatment is a treatment that is extensive. There are many things involved. The patient needs to understand this.
To help the patient feel more at ease, we can sometimes sedate the patient intravenously so that they are more relaxed. Sometimes they can almost fall asleep during the treatment, which is very helpful because there is a lot of anesthetic involved.
During the surgery we will remove teeth, which can be quite traumatic. We will drill into the bone to put in dental implants, which, again, is quite traumatic, but at the end of that full day of treatment, the patient will walk out with a completely fixed smile.
They come in with teeth that no longer work, with missing teeth, and leave with a beautiful, fixed smile.
What happens after treatment?
After the surgery is complete and the patient has left the office with their fixed smile, this is not the end of the story.
Initially they are bruised, swollen, in quite a bit of discomfort for at least the first two days to the first week. We prescribe antibiotics, painkillers, antiseptic mouthwashes and initially they are told to keep a light diet and make sure they don't chew anything too hard.
I always say if it cracks, skips or pops, don't eat it.. But once they get used to it and once they get used to their new teeth and their new smile, within a few weeks they function better, they smile better, the swelling has gone down, the bruising has gone down, all of this is just temporary.
What they are left with then is that beautiful smile.
So once the initial healing has occurred and the patient has gone through the two to three week review period, what we can see is that then the implants need all the time they need to heal.
We generally require 12 weeks of healing before we then consider fabricating the final teeth. The teeth that you leave with a smile on the same day are essentially fixed, but it is a temporary bridge.
“Final teeth will generally last between 10 and 15 years.”
The final bridge is built after all the gums have healed, all the surgeries have been resolved, all the implants have healed, and then we can make the final teeth that have more long-term strength.
How long does it take?
In general, the final teeth will last, depending on the construction material, between 10 and 15 years. The implants themselves have a good success rate, which shows that patients should get over 15 years from this type of work.
People always ask me “"Are dental implants forever?".
I always say that nothing lasts forever, but if you take care of them, if you maintain them well, if you see your dentist regularly, if you go to the hygienist regularly, because this is just as important with implants as it is with teeth, you should get a decent longevity out of this style of work.
Same day dental treatment is not age specific. The key consideration is how the patient presents. I have done this style of treatment for a 24/25 year old. They had severe neglect, they had medical conditions that meant they lost their teeth at a very young age. I have done this treatment on patients up to 80/90 years old because these patients eventually lost their teeth just through wear and function, these patients equally said the same thing that the 24 year old said – “I don’t want to wear a denture, I don’t want to wear something removable”.
Therefore, the same-day smile solution gives them the opportunity to keep everything repaired.
Deserve?
I've probably done over a thousand smiles in the same day in my career so far. And yes, I assume you're listening to what I've discussed about the surgical aspects, the healing aspects, the bruising, the tenderness, the swelling that can occur, and all of these things are probably going to scare you to some extent.
But what I would tell you is that I asked every patient I did this treatment on, "If you had to go through this again and spend the money you spent to do this treatment, would you do it?".
And the answer is always the same – it's one hundred percent worth every penny and one hundred percent worth every bit of pain, swelling, and tenderness to get the result they got.
And that's really the take-home message. Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. But in this case, hopefully the omelet will taste amazing to the patient, and that's what they have to take home, because everything else is temporary, but what remains permanent is a fixed functional aesthetic solution.
