It helps preserve natural enamel and, due to the nature of composite, they can be easily repaired.

An overview

The anterior and posterior bonding procedure first involves matching the filling to the color of your tooth. A sealant gel is used to clean your teeth, followed by a dental adhesive that allows the dentist to bond the white filling to your tooth. Finally, the filling is layered in small increments, before a blue light is used to harden it and secure the filling in place. Once the dentist is happy with the overall shape of the composite, it can be sanded and adjusted to achieve a natural look that matches the rest of your teeth.

Your dentist may be able to offer a guarantee on the longevity of your composite, but nothing in dentistry lasts forever. After a while, your filling may start to look dull or discolored. This is a common occurrence in dentistry, so damaged fillings need to be replaced. It is a simple procedure to change a filling, and in some cases, you may not even need an anesthetic.

“Gold fillings cannot be repaired as easily and do not have the same adhesive capabilities as composites.”

Those who have silver fillings will find that, in the end, they willor they will start to expand and cause cracks in the teeth, which can lead to cavities under the filling. Large silver fillings will eventually wear down the tooth and eventually require a crown. In these cases, your dentist may look to replace them with white fillings to prevent the tooth from breaking and needing a crown in the future. Gold fillings that are produced in a laboratory are very good for your teeth because they are often long-lasting. However, they do not offer the same benefits in that they cannot be repaired as easily and do not have the same bonding capabilities as composites.

What about the costs?

If the treatment is relatively minor, the cost is not likely to vary much. For example, for the treatment of a small cavity, an amalgam filling may cost around 80£ or 90£. For the same treatment using a white filling, given that it is small, it may cost around 120£. However, if you want to cover a larger area, using white filling, for example, the cost will likely be considerably higher. (200£-250£), as this will involve additional materials such as matrix strips.

Anterior vs. posterior composites

Anterior composite is generally more difficult to perform; it is more visible, therefore, there are many more things to consider. The final shape of the tooth must be symmetrical, and the gloss must be amazing for the best result. On the other hand, in the case of posterior teeth, there is already a foundation that the dentist can follow to fill the tooth.

And what about the appearance?

Personally, I try to achieve a natural look for my patients. Some patients ask for their teeth to be shaved to give them a flat look or for me to add fillings to the ends to make them completely smooth. The downside is that this gives your smile an artificial look that looks unnatural, not to mention that you are drilling into perfectly healthy enamel that should be preserved.

I like to use only the amount of composite that is needed and let the art form show through small effects and the care that has been put into the tooth, as opposed to gluing material and making it completely flat.

The concept of how an ideal set of teeth should be formed and their anatomy comes from my time doing dentures at university. In most cases, it is said that those whoThe front teeth should be about the same height as the canines. And the two adjacent, lateral teeth, on either side, should be slightly smaller. Usually, ffemales tend to have rounder, softer edges, while males have sharper edges. These are generally the parameters we will look at when designing a smile.

In addition, we also look at the patient's face as a whole and consider what works for them. The fine details we need to focus on are decided by examining the condition of the existing teeth and considering any small lines, brown marks, or translucency of the surrounding teeth.

The condition of the teeth and the dentist's work

Each patient’s teeth are very much unique and we all have distinct features. While some people have few or no imperfections, other patients’ conditions can make cases more complex. Brown marks and translucent edges can make a case particularly difficult for the dentist to study and replicate for each individual tooth. Additional equipment is also needed, such as special shades to mimic the nature of existing teeth.

When a tooth is made up of a single color, it is much easier for the dentist. He or she may only require a single color of composite, which can be completed in a much shorter time.

Process details

Typically, a patient who wishes to undergo treatment will sit for a consultation with the dentist to review their current situation. This ensures that the patient is aware of what exactly can be achieved with their smile.

“This shouldn’t be a daunting process because it doesn’t involve any injections.”

You may even be presented with a chairside mock-up showing what your teeth will look like after they are built. This shouldn't be a daunting process as it doesn't involve any injections. Your dentist will focus solely on your treatment plan and what options are available to you.

Your treatment will be performed in a longer follow-up appointment, and the length of time will depend on the size of the composite and the dentist's ability to replicate the natural appearance of a tooth. For me personally, a small white filling on a back tooth can be easily implemented and completed in half an hour.

For the front teeth, a longer programming due to the complexity and attention to detail it requires. Depending on the number of teeth you need treated, your dentist will allocate you a time slot and you may be in the dental chair for between 1 and 4 hours. This does not mean that it will be a continuous session; regular breaks will be given. Ultimately, everything is done with the intention of leaving you with a smile you can be proud of.

Dr. Kunal Desai vorbește despre tot ceea ce înseamnă lipirea compozită și despre ceea ce ar trebui să aveți în vedere înainte de a urma un tratament.
