Having a whiter, brighter smile is known to improve self-confidence, so it is no wonder that more and more people are turning to teeth whitening. And where popularity reigns, so does folklore. Below are some of the most common expressions heard when it comes to teeth whitening.

“White teeth are in fashion”

Absolutely! I mean, almost no one would actually choose to have a darker shade of teeth if they had the choice, and most people would definitely opt for a brighter, whiter smile. Ladies, it's like wearing red lipstick with yellow teeth compared to the impact with white teethor even the reason why so many brides whiten their teeth to match their white wedding dress on the big day. And for you gentlemen, it's similar to having white teeth alongside your bright white shirt, as opposed to the contrast of yellow teeth.

So, to a certain extent, yes, “White teeth are in fashion.” However, I don’t think this concept will gradually disappear, just like fashion trends. Over time that having white teeth seems to be an attractive, confident and more "Hollywood" smile“, this is actually not a new phenomenon and has been done using various techniques for decades.

Apart from a cosmetic improvement, a visible darkening of the teeth can be considered a physical handicap on self-confidence, physical attractiveness, as well as employability.

“Teeth whitening damages teeth”

FALSE ❌ “Teeth whitening removes a layer of your tooth”

FALSE ❌ “Teeth whitening destroys your teeth”

FALSE ❌ “Teeth whitening damages enamel (the outer layer of the tooth)”

One of the main concerns my patients seem to have about teeth whitening is whether the procedure will be harmful to their dental health. I completely understand why this can be a concern and a barrier, however, let me assure you that the long-term safety of tooth whitening has been repeatedly established; Research shows no significant long-term effects associated with professional home whitening treatments containing 10%, 16% carbamide peroxide, or 6% hydrogen peroxide.2

Professional teeth whitening does not work by stripping any aspect of the tooth or damaging the enamel. Instead, the ingredients penetrate the layers of the tooth (enamel and dentin) and, in turn, illuminate the tooth from the inside and out.

As dentists, it is our duty and professional obligation to ensure that you have healthy teeth, suitable for teeth whitening, and that the procedure is performed safely.

“Over-the-counter kits work just as well”

Be careful! Taking the dentist out of the equation when it comes to teeth whitening removes the safety net. The ingredients in some over-the-counter methods can include acids and abrasives that can cause damage to your teeth.

The legal limit of hydrogen peroxide (the agent used for teeth whitening) that dentists can prescribe in the UK is 6%. Regulations vary from country to country, but kits available in Europe contain a maximum of 0.11% hydrogen peroxide, which is a much lower percentage by comparison. So in the short term, they may do the job temporarily, but prescription whitening penetrates deeper layers of the tooth, and therefore the results are longer-term.

Some social media influencers are endorsed to advertise various systems, most of which are not always prescribed by a dental professional; systems such as whitening strips, dye whitening systems, and UV light systems are considerably cheaper options, but their safety risk is not determined and, in turn, the safety and effectiveness of dental whitening is lower than that of professional whitening.

“I can no longer drink tea/coffee/red wine”

The teeth whitening effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke or if you eat or drink products that can stain your teeth.

Of course, the above causes extrinsic staining (surface stains), which reduces the shine of the teeth, but that doesn't mean you can't drink them. For maximum effect, I generally advise patients to avoid such foods/drinks that stain only DURING the whitening course, unless I use Enlighten, where diet is irrelevant. With good maintenance, regular visits to the hygienist to remove any stains, and following the whitening advice provided by your dentist, you should be able to continue to maintain your diet as normal.

“Whitening toothpastes will do the job”

Well, it might to some extent. Personally, I advise most patients to use a standard fluoride toothpaste (like Oral B Pro-expert or Colgate Total), as many whitening toothpastes are abrasive to the teeth – Evo White is not, but that’s kind of the exception – and once you wear down your tooth, the lost tooth tissue will never grow back – scary, right?! Toothpaste can still help remove surface stains from your teeth and, in doing so, brighten their appearance.

“Sensitive teeth”

If you already suffer from sensitive teeth, teeth whitening may exacerbate sensitivity during treatment. Just because you have sensitive teeth doesn't mean you can't whiten your teeth. Your dentist will look for areas at risk of increased sensitivity before starting treatment on you and will care for you accordingly.

If you don't normally suffer from sensitivity, you may experience some form of it during the whitening process. This is completely normal, so don't be alarmed if you experience some sensitivity; simply skip a day and let your teeth recover.

Remember, sensitivity is only short-term.

Behold some tips to help you overcome sensitivity:

Start using a toothpaste for sensitivity 2 weeks before starting treatment.

Skip a day to allow your teeth to settle.

Desensitizing varnishes can be applied to teeth to reduce sensitivity.

Sugar-free gum can be a good distraction.

Use a good whitening system that will have a formula that also focuses on reducing sensitivity.

“Teeth whitening with blue light is faster”

You may be tired of me telling you this, but if it is prescribed by a dentist, then yes, you can use the “blue light system” as the prescribed gels are still used. However, without the combination with at-home whitening, the long-term effect is reduced. I generally explain this to my patients as the “Cash Rich Time Poor” option.

If you kept your mouth open for an hour and didn't allow saliva to touch your teeth, after an hour, with or without the blue light, your teeth would appear whiter. What you are doing here is DEHYDRATING your teeth, which makes them appear whiter, and this is not actually a result of pure whitening. So, what you may see in some exhibitions and shopping malls may seem cheaper and faster, but they are not necessarily efficient.

“Look for the best deal”

The demand for whitening is very high. I mean, it's probably the most in-demand dental procedure and it has a massive global market, so no doubt people are looking for the best deal.

In fact, all prescription whitening gels will effectively whiten your teeth, regardless of brand or price, as the basic ingredient is likely to be the same; they may have differences in specific details or protocols, but they share a common purpose with scientific research behind them.

I strongly believe that you get what you pay for and the same goes for whitening. If something is very low, I tend to wonder why.. In my opinion, the treatment is worth the cost – you wear your smile every day!

I always discuss with my patients the available options that suit them, but I never compromise on the final result or on meeting their individual requirements.

“Coconut oil pulling, baking soda, charcoal… Home remedies…”

Science VS nature? These seem to be hot topics for home remedies in recent months/years.

It seems to me that in the last year and maybe even longer, there has been a lot written about oil pulling and this may or may not help remove plaque/bacteria in certain ways, but it does not whiten teeth any more than if you swished your mouth with water or mouthwash.

Baking soda is a versatile ingredient and has endless uses, from cleaning your kitchen and cooking to removing stubborn stains from carpets and neutralizing odors. When it comes to teeth, though, it can do a fabulous job of lifting red wine or coffee stains from the surface of your teeth, just like charcoal toothpaste, but these are abrasive, so they can wear down your teeth – I hope you haven’t already forgotten the idea that tooth tissue will never grow back once it wears down. And well, if you did, here's a reminder!

The real question is: do you really want to brush your teeth with baking soda or charcoal?

We don't want beautiful teeth at the expense of unhealthy teeth, so I would suggest sticking to what is proven.

“Teeth whitening doesn’t last”

What does eternity mean to you? I originally whitened my teeth 9 years ago and even though I've had them filled in over the years, they've never gone back to the shade they were before whitening. Having first-hand experience, for me it's always been worth it.

As expected, with our choice of drinks and foods, our teeth can become discolored and no longer appear as bright as they once did. In fact, it is very easy to keep your whitened teeth “up to date” after you have your custom aligners fitted to your teeth; simply wear the trays for a night or two, as recommended by your specific whitening protocol. It's that simple! A more regular refill, for example once a month, keeps your teeth whiter.

You may be looking for a way to brighten your smile and one or more of the myths above may have been your barrier to moving forward.

During routine checkups or consultations with my patients, we decide on their expectations and desires. There are many effective whitening systems, and I have incorporated Enlighten more into my daily practice as the “apple” of teeth whitening and a complete package to ensure that my patients have the most enjoyable teeth whitening journey.

You smile, I smile – that's how it works.

reference

Haywood VB.
