Technology is advancing, and techniques are changing and improving. Patients are more dentally educated and demanding than they were a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great example of this is the conservative option for smile reshaping. Ten to fifteen years ago, smile reshaping usually consisted of preparing teeth for crowns or veneers. Patients are realizing that it is more conservative and, with good treatment planning and proper retention, long-lasting. The more favorable options are usually, <strong>&quot;invisible&quot; orthodontic appliances\u201c<\/strong>, such as lingual braces (or inside\/behind the teeth) or <strong>removable orthodontic appliances<\/strong>, such as Invisalign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having straighter teeth not only looks better and boosts self-confidence, but it has also been shown to improve oral health, which in turn has several overall health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Invisalign <\/strong>consists of a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. Invisalign aligners are <strong>usually worn for 21-22 hours a day,<\/strong> being removed only when you eat, drink hot or sugary drinks and when you brush your teeth. They are changed every week as they guide your teeth into the correct position. There are no brackets or wires and none of the restrictions that come with metal braces \u2013 you can eat whatever you want without damaging your braces. They have also been shown to be better for your teeth and gum health than regular braces, as they are removed during brushing and flossing. The length of treatment depends on the amount of movement required and how complex the case is, but can range from just a few weeks to around a year. Once your teeth are straightened, we look at the next steps to improve your smile and move on to teeth whitening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Teeth whitening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professional teeth \u201cwhitening\u201d or bleaching treatment is usually one of three methods \u2013 <strong>in the office, at home or a combination of the two<\/strong> (where teeth are typically whitened over 14 nights and then a power boost in the office). We have found that combination systems work best and provide the most lasting results.
