What patients really want when they ask for a perfect smile.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day at work, I hear this, more and more people want to feel better about their smile, and interestingly, the search for the perfect smile has no age limit<\/strong>, so whether the patient is 20 or 60 years old, everyone wants to smile more confidently!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what does a perfect smile actually mean? To answer this question we need to consider a number of elements that together will visually create a perfect aesthetic smile. Some of these elements include the position, shape and shade of the teeth<\/strong>; if any of these are not correct, the smile does not look as good as it could\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now let's think about the shape of the teeth. We know that in the mouth there are teeth with different shapes depending on their function, so the front and back teeth do not look the same. So, with this in mind, what we need to look for in perfection is symmetry in a smile<\/strong>, the right side and the left side must look the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we age, our teeth can chip or wear down in different patterns, and we can slowly lose the symmetry that nature gave us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BONDING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that there is a dental treatment called PASTE <\/strong>which can restore the correct shape to chipped or worn teeth. Bonding is very conservative because we do not have to drill into the surface of the tooth to perform the treatment. Unlike veneers, the treatment is reversible because the composite material we use can be polished away and the tooth will return to how it was before the treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonding consists of<\/strong> building the tooth in layers, using a combination of shades to copy as closely as possible the shade of the other teeth and sculpting the correct anatomy of that tooth. Most of the time you don't even need anesthesia to do the treatment because, as I mentioned above, it's not about milling<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real case<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recently performed this treatment on one of my beautiful patients. Matt's wedding was in a few weeks and he asked if I could help him smile more confidently for his wedding photos; he didn't like the shade of his teeth and had always hated the shape of two of his front teeth and the space between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt was looking for a time- and cost-effective treatment. We discussed all of the options available to him in detail, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Whitening with Enlighten Evolution. <\/strong>With this option, we would only have improved the shade of the teeth, without changing the shape, an option that he immediately gave up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Bonding. <\/strong>This was recommended because his left front teeth are thinner than his right and are also slightly misaligned. Because of this, the teeth did not look symmetrical and a gap formed between them; by applying composite material to the sides of the teeth, we can then widen their size, making them appear as wide as the teeth on the right and restoring symmetry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Facets. <\/strong>With this option we would also have restored symmetry by placing porcelain veneers on the front teeth; unfortunately, this treatment required milling away some of the healthy enamel to create space for the porcelain. Matt was very keen to be as conservative as possible, so he declined this option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign.<\/strong> This consists of aligning his teeth to place them in the correct position before building them; with this option we could have distributed and aligned all 4 front teeth to create the ideal symmetrical spaces to then build up to the correct width of each tooth. Unfortunately, this option would have required at least 4 months, and the wedding date was only 8 weeks away.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    So, considering the time available before the wedding, the budget, and his wishes, we decided to do Enlighten Whitening followed by bonding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    It is very important to note that every time we treat anterior teeth, we must ensure that the patient is satisfied with the shade of their teeth.<\/strong>; if he thinks of a teeth whitening<\/strong> in the near future, we must advise him to do this before to perform any work on the front teeth<\/strong>. Imagine you have invested time and money in your front teeth, and a few years later you want your teeth to be whiter, and your dentist comes back and tells you that you can\u2019t do it! The reason is that any fillings, bonding, crowns or veneers you have will not change the shade, the whitening gel only works on natural teeth. This basically means that you either live with that shade of teeth, or you have to change all the work that was previously done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, getting back to Matt's teeth, his whitening was very successful and only took a few weeks to achieve an excellent result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Two weeks later I had the bonding treatment, these 2 weeks of break between whitening and bonding are very important to achieve a better shade match <\/strong>(the shade of the teeth will be more stable) and better adhesion of the composite material to the surface of the teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I started the bonding by choosing the right shade, matching the other front teeth, this is essential to obtain very natural results; after that, I cleaned the tooth surface, applied the adhesive and started building in layers; I distributed the available space between the 2 teeth I was working on, copying the anatomy and characteristics of the opposing teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We completed the treatment by polishing the surface of the fillings to remove excess material and make them shiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Matt was amazed by the results and felt very happy and confident in his new smile, just in time for his wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
